Thursday Tips

Happy Thursday!! Today, I thought I'd share a few tips with you. Today's topic: Reading more books.

On a random January day, I decided I was going to read more.

I used to be such a great reader, and then I stopped. I let all my good reading habits go right out the window. I would read maybe 1 or 2 books A YEAR. I didn't like it, so I changed my habits.

Here a few things I've done to make reading easier and more fun!

1. Read on your iPhone, iPad, Kindle, etc.

I started this journey by reading books on my phone via iBooks. I like this way for a few reasons. I can't flip pages to read ahead- a terrible habit of mine! It tells you what percent of the way you are through the book. You can set a goal for each day- I found myself upping the goal quite often and was excited to reach my goal. It also keeps a daily streak for you.

For my birthday, I got a Kindle. Yesterday I started my first book on it. So far, I love it. It is taking some getting used to. Right now, I feel like iBooks is a little easier to navigate, but I'll figure it out in due time.

Now, I do enjoy browsing Barnes and Noble, and a paper copy of a book cannot be beat. BUT, I do really love reading on my phone or my Kindle. Books are also cheaper if you go that route.

2. Just START. And keep going!

I know it doesn't seem that simple, but it really is. If you want to start reading, read. If you're getting bored of whatever book you're reading but want to know how it ends, keep reading. Most of the time books have boring parts, but then they get so good. Last month, I reread two books that I had started years ago but couldn't get into back then, and I ended up LOVING them!

3. Read when you can.

Sometimes when I'm mindlessly scrolling Facebook or Instagram I think, I could be in bed reading right now. So I do that. I love to read in bed. It's so cozy. If you think you don't have time to read during the day, read at night when you might otherwise be scrolling social media. Take a bath and read. Read in car rider line. Read while you're in a waiting room. Find little pockets of your day to read- even if it's just a chapter or two. If you're like me and work isn't super busy, read!!

4. Take reading breaks.

This basically cancels out my other tips. But I think it's essential to take reading breaks. If you aren't in the mood or you can't find the motivation to read, put the book down and go back to it later. When I do this, I start to miss my book and get super excited to go back to it. So, take a break. It'll be there when you get back.

5. Read outside of your comfort zone.

Reading genres I never thought I'd like has been so refreshing and has honestly been a key player in my reading more. New to me genres keep my attention so well! If you think you only like chick-lit, pick up a historical non-fiction. Read a murder mystery vs. a memoir. It will really change the way you view reading, I promise!

Ok, I think those are my biggest tips that I've learned along the way! I hope they help! Reading is so fun and such a great hobby to have. If you need book recommendations, I have a few here. I post my book reviews at the end of each month. I also love following @readwithjenna on Instagram for book recs. Mix and Match Mama is a great resource as well!

Happy reading!!!

Let's Look: September 2024

Hey, friends! I hope you are having a great week so far! Today is the September edition of Let's Look. But before I get into that, I want to talk a bit about today, September 11. Today is the 23rd anniversary of the attacks on 9/11. I was only one year old when this happened, so I obviously do not remember where I was or what I was doing or anything from this day. All I know is because of the people who continue to honor to victims and the heroes of this day. I have had the honor of visiting the memorial and museum in NYC twice now, and both times I have been were such an incredible experience. Visiting there is heavy. It is sad. It's informative. It's also beautiful to see how our country came together in such an awful time. I love this picture that I took on my last visit. The leaves in the picture are from a tree that survived everything from that day 23 years ago. It was transported to a greenhouse for a while, but it was eventually moved back, and I loved that I could...
